It was an early start for the U12 Orcas on Saturday morning, as they headed out on the 7.30am ferry to William Green Reserve, to verse Fencibles United U12 Orange.
The first half saw two sides keeping each other in balance: the Orcas sporting their passing game, with quick one-twos and occupying open space as practiced during training. It was Fencibles however who scored first, with a shot from the edge of the box that got deflected off Orca defender Theo Jordan-Wise’s back and left goalkeeper Kylo Robinson without a chance. Bad luck. Meanwhile, Orca strikers Salo Garcia-Dinerstein, Monte Schwarz and Lachie Howes, struggled to break loose from the Fencibles’ pacy and rock-solid defenders.
Being 1-0 behind at half time, the Orcas were eager to level the score. Focused on moving the ball up the pitch, however, more gaps fell in the Orca’s midfield and defence lines, which the Fencibles strikers were happy to make use of. Goalkeeper Kylo Robinson was put to work and made several crucial saves. The play kept moving up and down, but in the end it was a series of incidental mistakes from the Orcas that helped Fencibles – who were never really in danger themselves – to extend their lead.
The 4-0 score at full time probably did not reflect the balance in the game, but it was a deserved win for Fencibles. The Orcas, who have won all their home games so far but struggle to be effective during away games, look forward to finding back their good form next weekend, when they verse Western Springs U12 Cougars at Onetangi Sports Park.
